Taking steps to protect yourself from diabetes starts with awareness.

This year’s World Diabetes Day Walk for Change ends with a blue circle, a global symbol of diabetes awareness, representing the solidarity of the global diabetes community needs in response to epidemics.

Diabetes is a preventable and controllable disease: moving regularly and walking as often as possible can help. This was one of the messages shared during a fun early morning walk around the Quezon City Hall grounds on World Diabetes Day. Led by Novo Nordisk Philippines, in collaboration with advocacy partners, the local government of Quezon City, the Royal Danish Embassy in Manila, South Star Drug and medical organisations Importantly, this event has the theme “Walking for Change”.

” And emphasises the importance of taking steps to prevent diabetes, first with accurate information and specialised health care.

World Diabetes Day has been celebrated worldwide since 1991 and now more than 160 countries around the world participate to address growing concerns about the growing health threat that diabetes causes. According to the latest report from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 1 in 10 adults worldwide has diabetes More than 90% have type 2 diabetes Nearly half of these cases are diagnosed.

The Philippines is one of the countries that needs to increase awareness efforts.

“The latest report of the DOST Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) in 2019 indicates that in 2018, the prevalence of diabetes was 7 9% and the prevalence of pre diabetes was 8 2%. By comparison, in 2008 the rate was only 3.4%, and even then, it was a cause for concern,” said Dr. Elizabeth Catindig, executive director of the Diabetes Research Foundation (ISDF) said. Catindig, one of the special guests at the event, continued: “We are seeing an increase and spike in numbers, so the concern is valid.

One of our battle cries is that tomorrow’s diabetics will come from today’s children; Therefore, we must make efforts to prevent this phenomenon.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte participated in the early morning activity over the weekend to demonstrate her awareness of the health threat and her office’s solidarity with the cause.

“We have local programs and initiatives that the Quebec Ministry of Health has implemented to promote diabetes, including detection, screening, management, and prevention.

» LGU efforts include a database of people affected by the disease and those diagnosed enrolled in a program that provides comprehensive individual monitoring. “We have passed an ordinance that mediation is free for those enrolled in the program.

We maintain strong relationships and an easy referral process with secondary health facilities in the system, and we run a very strong education and information campaign at the barangay level, a part of our health management system,” Belmonte added.

This year’s awareness efforts: “Know your risk, know your response” is extremely important because awareness is half the battle against this disease.

Novo Nordisk Philippines, for its part, has created a website, Diabetes What’s Next, that provides verified information to ensure that patients will have the accurate information and tools they need to manage My diabetes treatment journey.
